Prof. Dame Carolyn Hamilton

Director of Coram International at Coram Children's Legal Centre

Professor Dame Carolyn Hamilton is the Director of Coram International, a global consultancy and research institution,  Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Essex in the UK and a barrister. She was also the Senior Legal Adviser to the Children’s Commissioner and served as the Children and Families Commissioner to the Legal Services Commission. She is an internationally known child rights lawyer who has published widely.

Professor Hamilton was awarded the Sigrid Rausing prize for inspirational leadership in 2005 and the Children’s Legal Centre, of which she is Director, was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize in October 2009 for its work with refugee and asylum seeking children in England and its project for sexually exploited and trafficked girls in Tajikistan. She was honoured by the Queen in the 2017 birthday honours list for her work on children’s rights.

She has worked with UNICEF as a consultant for the last twenty years, focusing on child protection and violence against children. She has recently completed a technical paper on child protection to inform UNICEF’s new strategy for 2021. Her latest book, Children and Political Violence was published by OUP in October 2020.
